Applying For U.S. Citizenship

Naturalization is the process of becoming a United States citizen. If you have been a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least five years, married to a U.S. citizen and been a lawful permanent resident for three years, or served in the U.S. Armed Forces for at least one year, then you may be eligible begin your path towards citizenship by applying for naturalization. There are other requirements in addition to residency, such as demonstrating how long you’ve been physically present in the U.S., showing evidence of good moral character, and proving your basic knowledge of U.S. history, government, and the English language. It can be a lengthy process, and having the guidance of an experienced immigration attorney can make all the difference.

Becoming a U.S. citizen opens the door to significant rights and protections that go far beyond those afforded to green card holders. As a citizen, you’ll have a more secure status, and the ability to participate fully in the democratic process. If you are ready to embark on the journey toward citizenship, we encourage you to reach out to our knowledgeable team today. Let’s take this important next step together and work towards achieving your dream of becoming a U.S. citizen.

Starting the Process

During your first appointment at Eastbridge, we’ll carefully review your situation to confirm your eligibility to apply for citizenship. If you are eligible, then we will assist you in gathering the necessary information to complete the USCIS N-400 form, which is the official application for naturalization.

Our immigration attorneys will also identify any supporting documents you’ll need, and guide you through preparing and submitting the application. When it’s time to prepare for your citizenship interview, we’ll provide practice questions and helpful resources to boost your confidence.

Your Naturalization Interview

Naturalization interviews are conducted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), who will schedule a time and location for your interview. Make sure to bring along your green card and a valid state ID or driver’s license, which will be used to confirm your identity. At the interview, a USCIS officer will go over your N-400 application with you, reviewing your answers and asking if anything has changed. If there have been updates to your situation since you filled out the application form, you’ll need to share those changes and provide documentation for them if necessary.

Next, you’ll be asked to read one sentence in English, and then write down a sentence that the officer dictates. After that, you’ll take a civics test consisting of ten questions about U.S. history and government. You’ll need to answer at least six of the questions correctly to pass. With the right preparation, like the kind our immigration team provides at Eastbridge, you’ll be ready to take on these tests with confidence.

From reviewing your paperwork to practicing for the test, we’re here to make sure you're set up for success. Our experienced and knowledgeable team understands how meaningful it is to reach this point in your journey, and we’re dedicated to supporting you every step of the way. Reach out today to begin your path to U.S. citizenship.
