The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is empowered to detain non-citizens in some cases in order to ensure someone appears for their scheduled immigration proceedings, to carry out deportation proceedings, or if someone is judged a threat to public safety. In some cases, the agency will assign a bond amount—a fee that the detained person can pay in order to be released..
